Programmable Picture Quality Enhancement Architecture

In the conventional picture quality enhancement (PQE) architecture, all PQE blocks are designed only for a specified purpose. This structure is inherently inflexible and has temporary redundancy. By inflexibility we mean that the entire SoC must be redesigned to apply cutting-edge technology to a specific PQE block. This causes two limitations: one is that it takes years to deliver latest PQE algorithms to new customers, and the other is that existing customers cannot use PQE algorithm with the latest technology. Temporary redundancy means that some blocks become unnecessary in some cases. For example, for a 120 Hz SoC, the frame-rate up-conversion block becomes unnecessary for 120 Hz input. At SDC23, we introduce a programmable PQE architecture that eliminates such inflexibility and temporary redundancy. The general-purpose PQE processor, which will be newly adopted, can deliver the latest algorithms that don't require hardware changes, through continuous software updates. In addition, the processor's resources can be flexibly distributed to various PQE algorithms depending on the situation, eliminating temporary redundancy.
